A Country Crafters’ Faire!

Reporting the first  crafters fair at the McFarland Living History Ranch.

By Duane Ausherman

It was held on June 10, 9 AM to 4 PM and 26 booths were occupied by local crafters.  The weather was perfect and the visitor turn out was only fair, but considering that the decision was made to start small and learn, it was OK from the standpoint of the Galt Area Historical Society.

My job was to make signs to direct people to the ranch.  I elected to make only 40 signs and post them around town.

We used signs like this to advertise and direct people to the McFarland Ranch.

My "other job" was to welcome people to the McFarland Ranch at the gate, direct them to parking and solicit donations.  While doing this we inquired about how people heard about the craft fair.  Roughly half saw it in the paper and the other half just saw signs and followed them.  I had not anticipated such a good result for the signs being advertising itself.

The signs were placed to direct traffic entering Galt to the McFarland Ranch.  That was a poor idea and I would do it differently next time.  Only one sign was placed on the East side of the freeway.  More than half of Galt was ignored.  Only about 1/2 of the West side of town could see the signs.  Not a single sign was on "C" Street west of Lincoln.  My placement was poorly thought out.

The clientele for the craft fair was quite different than the Old Tractor Show in the fall.  There we get donations from about 80% of the visitors and we were lucky if we got 50% from this craft fair.  The donations were also much smaller amounts.  Each donation was about 1/2 of what we get at other events.

Volunteers for the craft fair

As usual we depend upon the help of volunteers.  Sometimes they are not even members of the historical society.  We do appreciate any help and these have really done a good job.

This is 13 year old Jesse Morales putting flyers on cars in parking lots.

As a last minute measure for exposure, Jesse Morales volunteered to put flyers on cars on both Friday and Saturday.  Thanks so much.

Jamie Davis helped ask for donations at the gate all day long.

Jamie Davis volunteered at the last minute when the scheduled high school girls dropped out.  She did a great job and even went without lunch, as the hot dog stand was out by the time that she got there.  Thanks so much Jamie, you made the day go faster.

Ben Sussman is the caretaker and Scott Lethbridge was in charge of the food. Thanks.

The Valley Crafters Guild was represented by several members who offered their goods.  This was a really fun bunch whom I suspect use this "crafting thing" as an excuse to have a lot of fun.  Posing for the camera is Sally Pendleton.
